Alliander rolls out CDMA-450 Technology

As part of the programme on Smart Utilities Central and Eastern Europe, we deliver a number of talks concerning innovation and new product launches.
One particularly interesting talk this year will be presented by Gilles Robichon, Product Manager Telecom at Alliander: CDMA-450: a new approach for DSO’s in Europe.
Telecommunications are becoming increasingly important for DSO’s as smart grids and smart metering develop. Grid management applications are of mission-critical importance and rely on telecommunications which become mission-critical themselves.
Although technical requirements can be met by a number of wireless technologies, other non-functional or strategic aspects cannot be fulfilled by existing commercial services, such as: extended life time (more than 15 years), security, availability or control on the solution.

Having the unique opportunity to utilize the available 450 MHz band and standardized and proven CDMA-450 technology, Alliander came therefore to the conclusion to deploy its own private wireless network.
The benefits of CDMA-450
Alliander believes that harmonizing the 450 MHz band within Europe, for specific use by utilities, would benefit through:

  • Even more synergies between utilities
  • Facilitating cross-border coordination
  • Increase security of supply and lower costs to energy consumers
  • Help to achieve the goal of a trusted mission-critical communication infrastructure supporting the smart meter roll-out and smart grid developments.

Most of smart grid and smart metering applications in Europe are currently based on wired communications or commercial wireless communications like GPRS. CDMA-450 is a mass market standardized technology but still relatively unknown in Western Europe and not yet used for smart grid applications.
With a programme packed full of innovative talks, the Smart Utilities Central and Eastern Europe is a unique opportunity to learn about new and exciting developments taking place across Europe.
