The Bangladeshi government has announced plans to privatise part of its power industry this year, in an effort to find ways to resolve the current power crisis in the country. It will sell a 25% stake in the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) and the Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO) to private investors. DESCO distributes power in the country’s capital city. Less than 20% of the population currently has access to electricity, energy theft is rife, and it is estimated that the investment requirement in generation, transmission and distribution is 45%, 15% and 40% respectively. The expectation is that foreign loans will have to be secured to develop the infrastructure needed to provide an acceptable energy service.
