Legislation to ensure meter accuracy

The Victorian government has introduced legislation to ensure the accuracy of gas, electricity and water meters. The Utility Meters (Metrological Controls) Bill 2002 will ensure that licensed technicians and inspectors oversee utility meter accuracy. Utility meters will be subject to the same legal controls that currently apply to other measuring instruments used for trade.

Since the 1990s privatisation of utilities in the state has meant that utility meter accuracy has been dealt with through licensing arrangements. Now utilities will be required to ensure the accuracy of meters, subject to oversight by licensees and inspectors.
