Manufacturing electronic meters in Egypt

Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Power has formed a committee comprising representatives from electricity distribution companies to investigate the possibility of producing electronic meters in the country, according to unified standards and specifications. The move comes as a result of the decision to introduce remote meter reading for residential electricity users.

The Minister of Electricity has stressed the need for manufacturers to comply with international standards, and to modernise their production facilities to keep pace with global technological developments. Both single- and three-phase meters will be produced. The government will grant a one year grace period, during which manufacturing companies should reorganise their production lines to allow them to manufacture electronic meters. Annual utility requirements for these meters is 800,000 to 900,000.
