Making 500 million lenses per year requires numerus stages of manufacturing to achieve a very high level of quality. Each step of the process requires the use of high quality water in significant quantities. As part of the continual improvement of its environmental management approach, for several years, ESSILOR has been conducting an innovative water-management programme. The group decided to take a structured ‘eco-design’ approach that has become a standard in five key stages: measuring, reducing, reusing, recycling and processing.
Through the identification of strategic metering points ‘water mapping’, a pilot project in a French facility resulted in a precise mapping out of the different ways of using water. This provided a site model of the consumption for each type of use (pre-treatment, process, sanitary).
“ESSILOR needs of a highly reliable supplier, able to support our project of water reduction, in a worldwide industrial environment. Qualification of needs and tests of Diehl Metering’s solution on the pilot site convinced us of the reliability and robustness of their radio solution. Moreover, metering technologies can manage multi-fluids and energy consumptions with the same infrastructure. Diehl Metering also offers a performing data management software, a genuine tool for supporting decision-making,” says Philippe Cuny, EHS WW operations director, ESSILOR.
Diehl Metering solution
Diehl Metering offered a water metering solution based on a complete fixed 100% radio network that ensures simple installation and setup in all countries as frequency is flexible according to account legal constraints, 868 MHz for Europe or 434 MHz for South America for example.
Different metering technologies are combined according to the plants – for instance volumetric, single-jet or ultrasonic. An IZAR RC i 868 R4 radio, associated to the receiver RDC and to the data management software IZAR@ NET, complete the network. To analyse other fluids and processes, Diehl Metering offers a temperature sensor IZAR RE Air and IZAR BE Pulse radio for electricity metering. Diehl Metering provided support and formed an ESSILOR team to carry out the installation at the first site. Thus ESSILOR will be able to improve its ‘water model’ at the other plants.
The data management software IZAR@NET sends information hour-by-hour according to the configuration requirements of ESSILOR. Water consumption monitoring reveals variations in comparison with a standard consumption rate per lens produced. A performing fixed-network thus allows precise measurement and a fine analyse of consumptions across individual metering, for each process, etc. The water model drove adjustments in the action plan. Thanks to this solution, the test site has reduced its water consumption per lens produced by 50% in just one year.
With the technical support of Diehl Metering, the staff of ESSILOR will be able to complete the next installation projects autonomously around the world.
“Diehl Metering solutions supplies key indicators on each type of consumption. Data analysing generates process improvements, allowing an economy of 50% of water consumptions in one year. For example, water leaks or process deviations are clearly identified, and we can decide to set up corrective actions faster and durably. ESSILOR has now a unique model for all the plants, that allows a global view of the good practices used. The Diehl Metering solution contributes significantly to our programme of economy performance,” concludes Philippe Cuny. MI
