Ed’s note: The Metaverse of the energy sector

Facebook is planning to hire 10.000 people in the European Union to develop the so-called Metaverse. Now, what is this Metaverse everybody is talking about and why should people that work in the energy sector care about it, you ask? Oh, I’ll tell you.

Metaverse, a term first used in science fiction – and specifically in Neal Stephenson's 1992 novel Snow Crash – is a combination of the prefix ‘meta’ and the word ‘universe’. And it refers to shared virtual environments.

Think of Oculus Rift – bought by Facebook seven years ago; coincidence? I don’t think so – and it's CineVR, only on a much larger scale. Compare smartphones to mobile phones from the 1990s and you can grasp the difference between VR and Metaverse.
