ComEd is helping its customers, federal employees affected by the current US government shutdown to meet their energy needs via a wide range of set assistance options available across northern Illinois.
The assistance options include the provision of finance to pay bills, flexible payment options, and programmes to reduce energy use and costs.
The aim is to reduce budget strain and avoid disconnection of service.
Payment options include:
Budget billing: Consumers can average payments out over a 12-month period to help them manage monthly energy bills
Flexible payment: arrangements which include individual tailored payment installment plans
Financial assistance programmes include:
- The Residential Special Hardship programme which is providing up to $500 to cover for energy needs in the event of financial hardship such as job loss, illness, or military deployment, or senior or disability hardships.
- The CHAMP (ComEd Helps Activated/Veteran Military Personnel) programme providing up to $1,000 to US Armed forces, the national guard and veterans.
- The Nonprofit Special Hardship programme
- The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Programme
ComEd has also urged affected consumers to employ energy efficiency measures to avoid spikes in their consumption and energy costs.
The utility is calling for consumers to buy efficiency services and products such as smart thermostats, LEDs, advanced power strips, and water-saving products via its online Marketplace.
The assistance programmes have been made available through the 2017 enactment of the Future Energy Jobs Act (FEJA).
FEJA has established $50 million in shareholder-funded ComEd programmess over five years to support veterans and active or disabled military personnel, seniors and families, local non-profits, and eligible customers who face financial hardship.
Under FEJA, ComEd also will invest $42 million per year from 2018 to 2021 on programmes to help eligible customers reduce energy use and save money.
