smart solutions

Con Edison has filed a proposal with the New York State Department of Public Service to improve its gas operations by deploying smart solutions.

The energy provider is seeking an approval to raise consumer bills by 1.5% or $2 per month to be able to raise the $305 million needed to implement the smart solutions.

The smart solutions include investing in renewable natural gas generation to ensure energy supply security and in consumer energy efficiency to reduce demand during peaks.

For instance:

  • Providing consumers with incentives to install energy efficient heating equipment to reduce peak winter-day demand by up to 25,000 dekatherms.
  • Helping consumers electrify heating systems to reduce winter peak day demand by 12,400 dekatherms.

Some 8,800 single-family homes in Westchester County will install ground-source heat pumps, 1,000 small and mid-sized multi-family buildings in Bronx will install air-source heat pumps.

Con Edison will provide some 1,000 small commercial and large residential facilities with incentives for heat pumps.

Marc Huestis, Con Edison’s senior vice president, Gas Operations, said: “This programme will help us maintain reliable service so that our customers can keep their homes and businesses warm and comfortable, while helping to support state and local energy goals.

“However, these measures do not eliminate the need for a new natural gas pipeline to keep up with our region’s energy needs.”

The proposal follows rapid increases in gas demand in New York City and Westchester County.
