Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has been awarded the ISO 14064-3:2006 certification in reporting of its greenhouse emissions. DEWA received the certificate for its 2018 annual carbon footprint, and its ongoing efforts to minimise its environmental impact.
Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (Dubai Carbon) and TÜV Nord CERT GmbH jointly carried out the independent verification, according to the requirements of ISO 14064-3 which specifies guidelines for the validation and verification of greenhouse gas emissions.
TÜV Nord CERT GmbH is a subsidiary of TÜV NORD GROUP, and provides Inspections, Testing, Assessments, Auditing and Certification for health & safety and environmental management systems.
The report discloses both direct and indirect sources of emission, including electricity generation fuel consumption, water processing fuel consumption, refrigerants, and company-fleet fuel usage etc.
"DEWA obtained the ISO 14064-3:2006 certification as a result of its intensive efforts to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development in Dubai. This supports the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who laid the foundation for building a sustainable future. DEWA is committed to being one of the first government organisations in the region in tackling climate change." said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
Al Tayer stated that carbon emission reduction is part of DEWA's environment strategy to support the Demand Side Management Strategy to reduce energy and water use by 30% by 2030, and the Carbon Abatement Strategy to reduce carbon emissions by 16% by 2021.
These efforts support the UAE Vision 2021 to achieve sustainable development that ensures air quality, protecting water resources, increasing the share of clean energy, and green development. The efforts also support the Dubai Plan 2021, to transform the Emirate into a smart, integrated, and connected city with sustainable resources, and DEWA's vision to become globally leading sustainable innovative corporation.
To reduce its carbon footprint, DEWA has adopted integrated green practices throughout its operations, and launched an Emission Reduction Programme in 2014 which provides an analysis of greenhouse gas emissions, and sets targets for reducing CO2 emissions whilst reinforcing energy-efficient and innovative solutions.
