India’s motorcycle and scooter manufacturers have to plan their transition to electric vehicles (EVs) – and they have less than two weeks to get it right.
Indian officials from the country’s Niti Aayog government think-tank met with manufacturers Hero MotoCorp, TVS and Bajaj Auto amongst others, and gave them the deadline, which was met with strong opposition.
The think-tank, headed by India’s Prime Minister, Nahendra Modi, plays a significant role in policy-setting, and has recommended that manufacturers only produce electric scooters and motorbikes with a capacities over 150cc from 2025 on.
The call comes at a bad time – motorcycle and scooter sales are at an all-time low, and manufacturers have warned of job losses and market disruption, but authorities stressed the national importance of transitioning to EVs, and their concerns regarding India falling behind on the global trend towards clean-energy powered vehicles, and hopes that the policy will reduce pollution in the country.
India’s government is currently considering clean mobility policy, under which ride-hailing services like Uber will need to have 40% of its fleet electric by as soon as 2026.
