Brazilian power distributor Elektro has selected Nokia to deploy a private LTE network to increase grid reliability and efficiency.

The 4G network will be made possible by Nokia’s solution AirScale Single Radio Network, comprising eNodeBs base stations, enhanced Packet Core and CPE (Customer Premises Equipment).

The development is expected to improve services to 75,000 consumers in the City of Atibaia and surrounding areas in the state of Sao Paulo.

The 4G network will reduce costs by increasing grid reliability by up to 50% and reducing commercial losses by up to 80%.

The rollout of the network is the first of its kind in Brazil.

The network will be deployed in a 3.5GHz frequency band to provide connectivity for grid equipment, smart meters, substations and distributed energy generation sources.

This will enable grid automation through real-time exchange of information between these devices and Elektro's Operations Center in Campinas.

Elektro will be able to detect and respond to outages quickly and even avoid outages before they occur.

Nokia Global services will design, deploy, integrate, provide assisted operation, maintenance, construction and training for Elektro.
