Salonit Anhovo is the biggest cement production factory in Slovenia. Founded more than 90 years ago, it has been an innovation driver for the region ever since.

It was a massive challenge for the company to adapt their infrastructure to the new environmental regulations, guaranteeing and maintaining the highest level of safety and efficiency for their operations.

In the past ten years, the factory has invested massively in its production line. It has a strong environmental regulation compliance strategy and is dedicated to optimising and reducing energy consumption.

In order to comply with European energy regulation and meet the energy consumption reduction target, Salonit Anhovo decided to carry out an energy management project.

“Our company wanted to understand into details the energy flow through the company, and we were looking for a system to handle energy consumption data automatically,” says Magda Gabrijelcic, energy manager at Salonit Anhovo.

The project required a custom-made solution to optimise energy-intensive production processes: Salonit Anhovo uses over 90GWh of electrical energy annually, more than 8GWh of gas, and over 400,000 m3 technological water. The cost of the consumed energy in the company amounts to more than 6,000,000 EUR/year.

The inhospitable industrial environment with a high moisture rate, extreme temperature conditions, and far spread production areas spanned over an area of more than 6 km2 made the project even more challenging.

Solution:

Solvera Lynx offered a modern and innovative solution for smart energy management based on wireless LoRaWAN technology. The approach was truly a game changer in the industry. It made deploying challenging, previously cost-prohibitive energy management projects, possible due to a focus on energy saving instead of investing in a wired communication network. Long range and unique penetration capabilities, flexibility, easy operation and maintenance, safe and reliable data transfer made LoRaWAN technology an obvious choice.

“Using LoRaWAN devices from Solvera Lynx allowed us to focus on the energy-saving potential of the project instead of the cabling,” confirms Gabrijelcic.

Transmission of the data was done using the Solvera ComBox.L communication equipment, which has a long battery life and is suitable for the harsh industrial environment. In total 36 ComBox certified devices were installed, 11 of which are for gas metering, 10 are for water metering, five for compressed air, and 10 are used for electricity meters. The data is gathered and analysed by advanced software platform GemaLogic.
