Japan’s Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba ESS), has launched what it’s calling the ‘world’s largest hydrogen plant’, the Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field (FH2R), which the company says can produce, store and supply as much as 1,200 cubic metres of hydrogen per hour – powered by renewable energy.

The new plant, which is powered by 20MW of solar, as well as local grid power, is intended to help stabilise the power grid, and facilitate more renewable energy use.

The hydrogen produced will mostly be used to power fuel cell systems, such as those in cars and buses, as well as other applications.

Overview of FH2R system

Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation partnered with Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, local utility Tohoku Electric Power and Iwatani Corp to build the facility’s 10MW hydrogen production unit.

FH2R hydrogen will mainly be transported in hydrogen bundles and tube trailers to consumers in the Fukushima Prefecture, the Tokyo Metropolitan Area and other selected regions of the country.
