Ecuadorian utility Empresa Electrica Quito (EEQ) has initiated a project to instal broadband over powerline (BPL) technology and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) to 700,000 homes in the country’s capital city, Quito.
A consortium of three local internet and telecommunication service providers, Telconet SA, Gilauco SA and Brightcell SA, are installing Corinex Communications’ BPL Access network across EEQ’s more than 15,000 km of medium and low voltage lines and connecting 7,000 transformers.
Deployment of the BPL network was started in December 007 in the major metropolitan area of Quito, where almost half of the city’s residents are located. Currently approximately 1,000 transformers per month are being connected and the full rollout is expected to be completed within two and a half years.
In addition the Consortium will be deploying automated meters, municipal security services and distribution automation of the EEQ grid.
In terms of the contract the Consortium will deliver broadband services for 10 years.
