Energy management solutions firm Itron announced its partnership with residential energy storage systems company Sonnen to help utilities manage distributed energy resources (DERs).
Itron is integrating its DER and demand response solutions suite, IntelliSOURCE Enterprise, with Sonnen’s battery storage technology.
The integrated solutions are expected to help utilities maximise grid efficiency through optimisation of energy storage and supply to meet demand.
The two solution providers are jointly implementing a pilot in California which involves demonstrating how the integrated solution can be used to not only monitor the impact of DERs and loads behind the meter, but also forecast the impact of these DERs and automatically optimise the operation of these DERs to maximise customer and grid benefits.
Steve Hambric, Itron’s vice president of distributed energy management, said: “We plan to partner with several other similar DER vendors so that utilities can access a broad portfolio of DER to optimise the grid and provide the customer with new choices and value. Integration of this technology is critical to helping both utilities and consumers thrive in an industry where distributed energy resources are becoming more abundant.”
Michelle Mapel, Sonnen senior director of sales and marketing, added: “The integration of our storage solution with Itron’s DRMS allows utilities to control and manage stored energy resources using a proven and popular platform, which enables broader customer participation in the expansion of renewables and economic benefits on both sides of the meter.”
