World’s largest integrated wind-energy storage system developed


Wind energy company Orsted and grid operator Eversource have announced the development of an energy storage system under proposed offshore wind project Bay State Wind.

Bay State Wind is partnering with NEC Energy Solutions to develop and integrate a 800MW wind system with 55MW/110MWh of energy storage capacity in the US state of Massachussetts.

The project is claimed to be the world’s largest comprising wind energy generation and an energy storage system.

The programme is part of efforts to encourage renewable energy and storage adoption to ensure grid stability during winter.

The energy storage system will be used to store wind energy and supply for consumer use to avoid heavy load on the main grid during peak periods.

The development will help reduce winter peak energy prices by approximately $158 million per annum.

The Bay State Wind is expected to create more than 1,200 annual jobs during construction of the project and over 10,800 indirect and direct jobs over the life of the project.
