Enel X has installed the first of 100 electric vehicle charging stations set to be deployed for the Italian city of Genoa by the end of 2018.

This will push ahead the national plan to develop comprehensive charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.

This is the first major metropolitan city to have signed up for the initiative and begun the installation of the charging stations provided for under the programme, which seeks to install 7,000 recharging stations by 2020 and up to 14,000 by 2022.

To further boost the use of electric vehicles throughout the city, Enel X, together with ALD Automotive, has created a special offer for employees and former employees of the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) of Genoa, who will be able to use the long-term rental service and the electric vehicle recharging service.

With the E-go Long-Term Rental offer, employees can choose the car they prefer, with all operating services included in a single fee.

“As a city government we are working on several fronts to improve the quality of life for the Genoese,” said the Mayor of Genoa, Marco Bucci.

“We decided to participate in this project with enthusiasm, because we believe that the future of transport, both private and public, lies with electricity. This will lead to the elimination of polluting emissions, especially fine particulates, and the noise created by thermal engines. The transition to electric mobility will produce undeniable environmental, economic and health benefits. Another step towards the future we want for Genoa, with the aim of making it the leading city in the Mediterranean once again".

“Electric mobility is proving to be a winning tool throughout Italy, in particular in the largest urban centres of the country. We are very pleased to present the memorandum of understanding signed with the City of Genoa, a strategic city for the realisation of our national plan for the installation of recharging stations,” said Francesco Venturini, Head of Enel X.

“In addition, thanks to the agreement with ALD Automotive, we will be able to offer our services to the employees of the Italian Institute of Technology, demonstrating once again the Group's commitment to collaborating with leading partners to undertake innovative projects that facilitate the transition to electricity and increasingly sustainable and zero emission mobility.”

The partnership between Enel X and the IIT was launched in 2016 with the aim of developing projects in the electric mobility and energy efficiency fields.

The collaboration continued in 2017 with the launch of the first corporate electric car sharing programme at the Institute, thanks to the collaboration of Nissan, which supplied two LEAFs and with the installation of the first charging station with V2G technology (Vehicle to Grid) that, when regulations in Italy will allow it, will enable the use of electric cars to stabilise the grid through the bidirectional exchange of the electricity stored in vehicle batteries.
