The filing made with Unicode Consortium comes ahead of the world of emoji day – 17 July and follows the introduction of some 230 new emoji characters across all industries in 2019.
In the electric vehicles industry, the US alone has witnessed a 8% increase in EV sales since April 2018. AAA forecast that 40 million Americans will buy an EV as their next car.
Globally, EV sales are expected to reach 10 million in 2025.
Rich Steinberg, director marketing, communications and Green City initiatives at Electrify America, said: “As EVs become more popular and charging station networks continue to expand, we felt it was time for an emoji that reflects the changing industry and future of transportation.
“We hope an emoji, a symbol used in everyday digital communication, will help more people get used to the idea of driving an EV and become excited about the possibility of owning one someday.”
