IEEE names finalists for ‘Empower a Billion Lives’ initiative

IEEE has named the 23 finalists who will participate in the organisation’s global competition aimed at using innovation to address extreme poverty and lack of access to energy in the developing world.

The finalists will as part of IEEE’s Empower a Billion Lives, participate in field tests to prove their solutions will help improve energy access in regions including Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

More than 450 teams had registered, of which 170 were accepted and reviewed to participate in the Empower a Billion Lives initiative.

Only 83 teams were approved by expert reviewers and invited to attend one of five regional competitions.

Dr. Deepak Divan, Empower a Billion Live’s Chair, said: “We hope Empower a Billion Lives will accomplish a lot of vetting and due diligence in the energy access market, and let investors and other interested parties identify great companies to work with.

“We also want to give innovative teams the resources and profile they need to succeed.”
