International smart grid initiatives launched


London, U.K. — (METERING.COM) — April 30, 2012 – The International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN) has launched new initiatives to advance the development and deployment of smart grids globally.

The 21st Century Power Partnership has been launched with the goal of unlocking large scale demand side management and renewable energy electricity generation. The Partnership will develop and share knowledge on policies, strengthen and disseminate technical tools that support both regulators and the private sector, and bolster the human capacity needed to lead this transformation. The Partnership will leverage this work to support national and sub-national efforts to deploy central station renewables, clean distributed generation, and energy efficiency at scale.

The Smart Grid International Research Facility Network (SIRFN) has been established to bring together interested research and test bed facilities to evaluate smart grid technologies and concepts in the niche between technology research and development and product commercialization and conformance testing. The SIRFN will enhance knowledge exchange on facilities’ evaluation capabilities and facilitate the coordinated development of evaluation protocols and round robin testing in six smart grid technology domains, including microgrids, distribution automation, and distributed energy resource integration.

The new Power T&D Systems project will assess the technical and policy needs for transmission and distribution systems as well as the interfaces between the two, with a strong focus on renewables integration. It is a result of ISGAN’s recent merger with the IEA Implementing Agreement for Electricity Networks Analysis, Research and Development (ENARD).

Among ISGAN’s achievements to date is the development of a smart grid information package and related tools and methods. So far this includes white papers on smart grid cyber security, managing smart grid consumer benefits and costs, and smart grid contributions to variable renewable resource integration. An online smart grid glossary (currently in beta version) is intended to build a common global vocabulary for discussing smart grid.

Other activities under way include the development of a global smart grid inventory, assessment of smart grid case studies, and development of benefit-cost analyses toolkits.

ISGAN currently has twenty-one member governments – Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Finland, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, U.K., and U.S.A.
