Canadian utility deploys AMI-enabled VVO programme

Lethbridge Electric Utility of Alberta has embarked on a project to improve consumer energy efficiency and lower their bills.

The energy efficiency project is cheaper compared to traditional efficiency initiatives as it does not involve the use of additional customer-end hardware or behavioral changes

Lethbridge Electric Utility is partnering with Dominion Voltage Inc to deploy the firm’s Volt/VAR optimisation technology.

The utility is using financial, technical and regulatory assistance being provided by Alberta Innovates to achieve provincial energy efficiency goals and promote technology-driven job creation in Canada’s dynamic energy sector.

Utilities in Alberta province will make use of lessons learnt from the project to expand the use of volt optimisation to ensure grid efficiency across the region.

The project follows a study conducted by the City of Lethbridge on how its utility department can boosts grid efficiency after deploying an advanced metering infrastructure in 2017.

Stewart Purkis, electric utility manager-LEU, said:  “Choosing a Volt/Var (“VVO”) solution that takes full advantage of our investment in AMI was very important to us.

“The EDGE® solution allows our team to have full visibility of voltage readings at each customer location and thereby drive maximum results. DVI has a well-proven product and their team took the time to listen to our goals and support our needs.”
