Volt/Var optimisation expands footprint in Canada

Lethbridge Electric Utility of Alberta in Canada has selected Volt/Var optimisation technology firm DVI to enhance energy efficiency and lower customer bills without the use of additional customer-end hardware or behavioral changes.

The Volt/Var optimisation technology complements the utility’s existing advanced metering infrastructure able to meet energy demands with existing energy generation resources.

The project will help Lethbridge Electric Utility of Alberta avoid investing in new energy generation resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The utility had deployed its AMI since 2011 through to May 2017.

Stewart Purkis, electric utility manager-LEU. “The EDGE solution allows our team to have full visibility of voltage readings at each customer location and thereby drive maximum results. DVI has a well-proven product and their team took the time to listen to our goals and support our needs.”

Todd Headlee, executive director-DVI. “DVI is passionate about working with Lethbridge Electric to launch a project that is likely to be a model for this region in Canada.”

A consortium of the region’s distribution facility operators will make use of the results of the project in deciding whether they should expand rollout of the solution province-wide.

The city of Lethbridge has also partnered with Alberta Innovate to develop an energy efficiency framework comprising energy savings goals and measures on how the region can promote technology-driven job creation in the energy sector.
