New York customers will find it easier to choose energy suppliers


EconnergyRockland County, NY, U.S.A. — (METERING.COM) — November 22, 2006 – Econnergy Energy Company, Inc., one of the largest independent energy suppliers in the U.S., has welcomed the New York Public Service Commission’s (PSC) recent order which will allow consumers to more easily shop for competitive energy rates.

The ruling will ensure that consumers have real-time, secure access to the information needed to select an energy supplier.
“This is an enormous opportunity for Econnergy and an important step for energy competition,” said Bill Cateno, Econnergy’s VP of Sales and Marketing. “Now a customer can choose a supplier at a mall, state fair, PTA meeting, or anywhere people congregate. A customer will no longer be frustrated by having to go home and dig through utility bills to obtain the necessary information.”

The PSC denied a proposal requesting that energy service companies have direct access to customer utility account numbers, because it felt it had to protect consumers’ privacy and prevent improper enrollments. However, it did agree that customers should have ready access to this information, and has instructed regulated utilities such as Consolidated Edison, National Grid and KeySpan to provide a secure mechanism for consumers to obtain their account numbers at any time.

Econnergy, together with the Small Customer Marketing Coalition (a group of independent retail energy marketers) pressed for a decision in favor of better access to account information for consumers. Last summer, Econnergy opened New York State’s first ‘Energy Store’, a kiosk in the Palisades Center Mall in West Nyack, N.Y. Speaking about that experience, Cateno explained, “One of the biggest challenges is that nobody carries their account number with them. You can get telephone service at a mall, or Dish or cable TV, but if you don’t have your utility account number, you can’t shop for gas or electricity. This ruling changes everything.”

Econnergy is already preparing ways for customers to utilize this newly available platform. Each utility must present their access plan to the Commission by December 30, 2006.
