The trial forms part of the Australian government's $94 million (US$ million) Solar Cities program. The Perth Solar City in Perth's Eastern Region includes the Shire of Kalamunda, Town of Belmont, Shire of Mundaring, City of Swan, Town of Bassendean and Town of Bayswater.

In its market role as a metering point operator, Tengelmann Energie plans to monitor the power consumption in the KiK stores and to transmit the relevant data to its central database, to KiK, and to the relevant local network operator.

Further over the trial period, the homes taking part in the trial saved over 10 tonnes of CO2, according to a statement on the project.

The project is designed to demonstrate the full benefits of installing a comprehensive distribution smart grid for consumers and the utility and includes approximately 110,000 advanced electricity meters, new distribution grid technology, distributed energy sources, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, smart appliances, and consumer systems and products to help customers manage electricity use and costs.

The Kill-A-Watt monitors have been supplied by Miami-Dade’s Office of Sustainability as part of the County's Energy Efficiency Campaign. The 150 monitors will be circulated among the Library’s 48 branches, where they can be checked out for up to 14 days.
