Tampa Electric has signed a contract with Itron as part of its street-lighting modernisation efforts.
Tampa Electric’s streetlight replacement programme aims to convert traditional lighting infrastructure to energy-efficient LED technology.
The utility will use Itron’s smart street lighting solution that allows communication between the utility and street lighting assets.
A total of 260 000 Itron smart photocells will be installed over the next five years.
By improving its grid communications technology, Tampa Electric is able to reduce expensive field operations whilst providing real-time notification of outages, thereby reducing response time, and supporting roadway safety and crime reduction.
The utility will be able to remotely control streetlight fixtures using advanced grid capabilities such as dynamic dimming.
Tampa Electric also has a foundation to enable distribution automation and smart city applications including air quality management or smart parking.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with Tampa Electric to update the utility’s lighting,” said Sharelynn Moore, senior vice president of Networked Solutions at Itron. “The utility will have a foundation to support multiple smart utility and city applications both today and tomorrow.”
