Chicago gas utilities respond to COVID-19 crisis with over $1m donation

US utilities Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas have donated more than $1 million in funding and COVID-19 personal protective equipment to 42 community organisations in Chicago.

Charles Matthews, the CEO of Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas, said: “COVID-19 has touched every community we serve in Chicago and the northern suburbs.

“Thousands of people in Chicagoland are facing financial hardship, serious health issues or loss of a loved one. We’re proud to step up and help organizations on the front lines of this crisis as we continue to deliver the natural gas our customers are depending on at this critical time.”

Up to $400,000 will be directed to community non-profits to address COVID-19 public health emergencies. This will include funding of food and shelter for health care workers on the front lines of the crisis.

$630,000 will support ongoing community partners of Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas that have been impacted by the crisis, including a domestic violence shelter, arts and education nonprofits, and organizations focused on economic development, homelessness and youth empowerment.

The donation also includes more than 10,000 masks and 10,000 pairs of surgical gloves to the Chicago City’s Department of Public Health.
