The utilities were recognised with the Excellence in Resourcefulness awards during Itron Utility Week.
The awards recognise the company’s recent and successful technology implementation.
Pepco was recognised for its Energy Wise Rewards, Bring Your Own Device and Thermostat Optimisation demand response programmes.
Through the programmes, Pepco provides its customers with Virtual Energy Assessment and tips on how best they can optimise their energy efficiency
The assessments are developed based on energy consumption, weather and thermostat data and help consumers to reduce their energy use during peak periods for grid stability.

These companies are being recognised for the second year in a row due to their continued effort to improve their customer-service oriented programs. Frost & Sullivan anticipates the penetration rate of smart thermostats to reach 63.7% in North America by the end of 2025. By capturing BYOD customers, these companies will be in a position to further improve the utility’s ability to reach its resourcefulness goals.”
California-based Carlsbad Municipal Water District has been recognised for deploying some 30,000 intelligent water meters to improve the efficiency of its meter reading, system maintenance and to reduce water loss.
Carlsbad adopted a 12-year plan and reduced it to a five-year smart meter rollout period which has helped consumers to reduce their water consumption by 37% in just six months.
“Carlsbad Municipal Water District took a thorough and careful approach to integrate the AMI network and overcame the challenges of a hilly topography. The water agency exemplifies a public entity that takes its responsibility for sustainability very seriously, especially given the location of a drought-prone area along with its ongoing risk of wildfires,” added Saeed.
