Saudi Arabia develops new green building rating system

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has developed a new green building rating system to improve water and energy sustainability.

The green building rating system Mostadam has been developed with assistance from the country’s Ministry of Housing and sustainable cleantech consultancy firm Alpin.

The Ministry used sustainability pillars laid out in the country’s Vision 2030, a plan to reduce Saudi Arabia’s dependence on oil, diversify its economy and develop public service sectors such as health, education, infrastructure, recreation and tourism

The new rating system has been developed over the past two years and is expected to improve sustainability in the construction industry and will have a resoundingly positive social and economic impact.

The standard will be applied on residential buildings, communities and commercial buildings in line with Arabia’s regional needs, local climate, and environmental characteristics.

Each rating system has two elements, the first is Design and Construction and the second is Operational and Existing.
