Salonit Anhovo is the biggest cement production factory in Slovenia. Founded more than 90 years ago, it has been an innovation driver for the region ever since.
It was a massive challenge for the company to adapt their infrastructure to the new environmental regulations, guaranteeing and maintaining the highest level of safety and efficiency for their operations.
In the past ten years, the factory has invested massively in its production line. It has a strong environmental regulation compliance strategy and is dedicated to optimising and reducing energy consumption.
In order to comply with European energy regulation and meet the energy consumption reduction target, Salonit Anhovo decided to carry out an energy management project.
“Our company wanted to understand into details the energy flow through the company, and we were looking for a system to handle energy consumption data automatically,” says Magda Gabrijelcic, energy manager at Salonit Anhovo.
The project required a custom-made solution to optimise energy-intensive production processes: Salonit Anhovo uses over 90GWh of electrical energy annually, more than 8GWh of gas, and over 400,000 m3 technological water. The cost of the consumed energy in the company amounts to more than 6,000,000 EUR/year.
The inhospitable industrial environment with a high moisture rate, extreme temperature conditions, and far spread production areas spanned over an area of more than 6 km2 made the project even more challenging.
Solvera Lynx offered a modern and innovative solution for smart energy management based on wireless LoRaWAN technology. The approach was truly a game changer in the industry. It made deploying challenging, previously cost-prohibitive energy management projects, possible due to a focus on energy saving instead of investing in a wired communication network. Long range and unique penetration capabilities, flexibility, easy operation and maintenance, safe and reliable data transfer made LoRaWAN technology an obvious choice.
“Using LoRaWAN devices from Solvera Lynx allowed us to focus on the energy-saving potential of the project instead of the cabling,” confirms Gabrijelcic.
Transmission of the data was done using the Solvera ComBox.L communication equipment, which has a long battery life and is suitable for the harsh industrial environment. In total 36 ComBox certified devices were installed, 11 of which are for gas metering, 10 are for water metering, five for compressed air, and 10 are used for electricity meters. The data is gathered and analysed by advanced software platform GemaLogic.
Benefits of implementing Solvera Lynx’s solution:
After using the LoRaWAN-based EMS for almost a year now, Salonit Anhovo has achieved real results and accomplished primary project goals: holistic monitoring of energy efficiency performance and reduction of energy consumption.
“After 16 months of good operations, we are highly satisfied with our choice. The solution we have created fits our organisation. Combox.L CI devices with LoRaWAN and Gemalogic as energy management system work for us”, confirms Gabrijelcic.
The introduction of a new energy management system, energy consumption optimisation, reduction of energy losses and CO2 emissions was possible due to the implementation of this innovative software solution that provided:
- A detailed overview of energy metrics in order to reduce consumption in the long run
- Analytics to identify consumption patterns, compare historical data, and to predict future energy needs
- Real-time consumption data and a detailed usage overview, which is gathered, processed, stored and shared throughout the organisation automatically.
- Protection from unexpected energy consumption based on pre-defined key performance indicators and alarm system implementation that send notifications when consumption increases.
Solvera Lynx expertise:
Salonit Anhovo project is just one of the examples from the Solvera portfolio. The company has provided other unique, future-oriented and custom-made solutions for smart metering (electricity, gas, water, air renewable energy), volume monitoring (fuel tanks/containers), different types of analyses (air quality, temperature, humidity), tracking/localisation and machine status monitoring.
A very wide range of business applications can benefit from their solution. Below are several examples:
- Energy and utility companies
- Oil and gas companies
- Factories, building, and facilities
- Transport and logistics
- Glass manufacturers
- Still production companies
- Food and beverages production companies
- Shopping and business centres
The solution provides an opportunity for companies to save time and money by choosing a custom-made energy management solution to optimise and reduce energy consumption, provide the highest level of safety and efficiency for their operations and adapt their infrastructure to the new environmental regulations.
