Uzbekistan signs 30 billion smart meter deal

South Korea-based telco KT Corporation has secured its second smart meter contract in Uzbekistan.

The 30 billion contract includes the supply of 360,000 smart energy meters over the next two years.

The deal follows KT Corporation signing a 120 billion deal ($106 million) with state-owned utility Uzbekenergo in 2015.

Under the 2015 deal, 1 million smart meters were installed in three provinces of Samarkand, Jizzakh and Bukhara.

Ulugbek Mustafoev, chairman of Uzbekenergo, said: “KT has successfully carried out its smart meter project since 2016, achieving satisfactory outcomes in effective energy management in Uzbekistan.

“We have asked KT to continue to cooperate in building an integrated smart meter system for the entire country.”

The smart meters will enable customers to view and pay their bills online and will increase consumer energy efficiency and utility grid operations through access to real-time usage data.

The solution provider is using its presence in the energy sector in Uzbekistan to diversify its area of focus and venture in the smart cities, fintech and digital healthcare industries.
