The US Green Building Council has awarded Unilever North America with an LEED Platinum certification for sustainability efforts conducted at the company’s headquarters in New Jersey.

The certification is the highest level of LEED certification available for sustainable buildings in the US.

The firm’s newly developed headquartered was assessed in a number of categories including location and transportation, sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, innovation and more.

The recognition follows the building being named the ‘Commercial LEED Project of the Year’ by the New Jersey chapter of the US Green Building Council and recognised by the New Jersey Business & Industry Associate New Good Neighbor Award.

In line with its 2014-launched Sustainable Living Plan, which aims to reduce the firm’s carbon footprint by 50% while doubling its business, Unilever has partnered with Edge and Perkins+Will to install energy efficient and smart technologies.

Upgrades made to Unilever’s headquarters include:

A 41% reduction in square footage which means fewer resources are needed to light and climate control the building.

The installation of smart technologies that record data and automate the building’s features and functions, including Internet of Things (IoT) systems that enable the building to learn from occupants’ behaviours and remember their preferences.

A shuttle service from New York City, Hoboken and Jersey City now supports a 40% reduction in individual cars, thereby reducing the carbon footprints of workers

Nathaniel Barney, Unilever North America, said:  “The Englewood Cliffs headquarters project was developed with sustainability at its heart, and it was evident at every step of the process from choosing our partners and planning to construction and design.

“At Unilever, we believe we have a responsibility to make sure our operations leave as small a footprint as possible on our planet while also providing our employees with a safe, healthy, and productive work environment. We are proud to earn the LEED Platinum certification as a result of these efforts.”
