PA Consulting have recognised ComEd’s investments in the electric grid, saying the work of its 6,000 employees has improved reliability by 60%. ComEd was recognised with the 2019 ReliabilityOne Most Improved Utility Award from PA Consulting.
“Our hardworking women and men and our smart grid technology investments have improved the resiliency and reliability of the energy grid in northern Illinois with a relentless focus on the customer,” said Terry Donnelly, president and chief operation officer of ComEd. “We’re honored to be recognised with a ReliabilityOne award for our ongoing work to improve system reliability for our customers and communities.”
ComEd’s smart grid investments have helped deliver fewer and shorter power outages for northern Illinois residents and businesses in 2018, with overall reliability improving more than 60 percent since 2012.
Customers have experienced 45% fewer outages since the utility started its smart grid investments in 2012; and in 2018 customers saw record reliability in the city of Chicago, where the frequency of outages has been reduced by nearly 60% since 2012.
ComEd joined its sister Exelon utilities at Pepco and Atlantic City Electric in receiving the award.

All utilities operating electric delivery networks in North America are eligible for consideration for the ReliabilityOne Most Improved Utility Award. The selection process is based primarily on system reliability statistics that measure the frequency and duration of customer outages. Each selected company undergoes an on-site certification process, which provides an independent review and confirmation of the policies, processes and systems used to collect, analyse and report a company’s reliability results.
