Village utility to use ComEd’s smart grid for advanced water metering

In the US state of Illinois, the South Elgin Village Board of Trustees have voted in favour of using ComEd’s smart grid network to connect its smart water metering infrastructure.

The South Elgin Public Works Department will become one of the first community utilities in the region to leverage ComEd’s smart meter infrastructure to enhance its water metering capabilities. The department will be installing some 8,000 smart water meters through 2022 under efforts to improve revenue collection, end water theft and enhance management of distribution infrastructure. The project will also help improve customer services.

The smart water meters will provide the municipal utility with the ability to read water meters remotely, obtain hourly consumption data and perform remote connect/disconnect.

Using ComEd’s two-way wireless communication network will help South Elgin to avoid the high costs and expenses associated with building its own separate wireless infrastructure.

Terence Donnelly, the COO of ComEd, said: “In addition to making service more reliable and resilient for families and businesses, ComEd’s smart grid network enables smart streetlights, smart water meters and other solutions that help conserve resources and enhance safety.

“By partnering with our communities, we’re delivering these additional benefits to residents and business owners without the burden and cost of building a redundant network.”

South Elgin Village President Steve Ward, adds: “This is such a good step forward for everyone who pays a water bill in our community.

“With a glance at a computer or a smartphone, residents will know how much water they’re using at any point of the day, or if they have a leaking toilet or forgot to turn off a garden hose for a couple of days. It’s smart, and it can save money, too.”
