UK meter asset provider Smart Choice Metering has selected smart grid solutions firm Landis+Gyr for the provision of an additional 120,000 SMETS2 smart meters.

The majority of the 120,000 SMETS2 smart meters will be installed for residential customers.

The deal forms part of efforts to accelerate the UK’s smart meter deployment to ensure the country meets its target of ensuring every home has a smart meter by 2025.

Landis+Gyr made a commitment to improve access to SMETS2 smart meters for both large and small utilities in the UK.

The announcement follows a similarly innovative partnership between Landis+Gyr and Calvin Capital announced late last year, which will see Landis+Gyr supply up to 2 million SMETS2 smart meters under a flexible purchasing mechanism. In total, the business has now been mandated to deliver a considerable amount of the 53 million smart electricity and gas meters which are expected to be deployed by 2025.

Together with Landis+Gyr’s strong presence in Manchester, this deal further cements the North West of England’s growing position as a hub for R&D and innovation, in particular around metering technology. Manchester-based Smart Choice Metering is one of the major meter asset providers in the North West and will be working with energy suppliers across the region and nationally.

Andy Pilley, owner and director of Smart Choice Metering said: “The deal announced today between Smart Choice Metering and Landis+Gyr is hugely exciting, and another step on our journey to become the leading installer of smart meter technology across the UK.

“Landis+Gyr are a well-known and trusted brand, and we look forward to them helping us supply our clients with the latest smart meter products.”

Simon Egan, managing director UK, Ireland and Netherlands at Landis+Gyr, adds: “We’re delighted to be working with an innovative organisation like Smart Choice Metering and look forward to supporting them in their rollout of SMETS2 technology in thousands of homes up and down the country.

Our suite of advanced grid-edge technologies has made us the supplier of choice for much of the industry and this contract is another example of Landis+Gyr’s ability to provide tailored, scalable solutions to the wider range of players who are helping drive the dynamic UK energy market.”
