Jones-Onslow Electric Membership Corporation, a rural utility based in Jacksonville, North Carolina, has selected Landis+Gyr for the supply and installation of advanced metering and intelligent grid networks.
The advanced metering system will include an RF mesh network, smart grid sensors and some 80,000 smart meters.
The RF mesh will also be used for distribution automation, advanced grid analytics, consumer engagement and smart streetlights management in the future.
Aaron Spencer, AMI project lead at Jones-Onslow EMC, said: "Our objective is to continually improve service for our members and updating our infrastructure plays a large role in this.
"By adding intelligent devices and advanced metering to the grid, we will be able to improve outage response, more easily locate areas in need of maintenance and become more efficient overall."
The deal is part of efforts to modernise the entire network and to meet the demands of the utility's 75,000+ customer base.
