European smart metering alliance established

Smart Meter InstallBy Jonathan Spencer Jones, Copenhagen, Denmark

The European Smart Metering Alliance (ESMA) has been launched to advance and support the development of smart metering in Europe.

Comprising companies and organisations interested in smart metering, the ESMA is intended to bring together all stakeholders to achieve consensus on smart metering, to promote innovation in smart metering, and to maximise the energy savings to be derived from smart metering.

Yes to smart metering

CopenhagenBy Jonathan Spencer Jones, Copenhagen, Denmark

Smart metering is a worthwhile goal to continue to pursue, delegates to Metering, Billing/CRM Europe have agreed, with 86% supporting this view and only 14% opposing it.

Moreover, more than half believed that smart metering is in an emerging adoption phase, with rapid innovation and changing technology. And 83% envisaged that there would be widespread rollout of smart metering in their region – i.e. to more than 50% of residential customers within the next ten years with as many as 11% expecting this target to be reached as soon as the next two years.

MDM software supports installations of over 10 million meters

ItronLiberty Lake, WA, U.S.A. --- (METERING.COM) --- October 13, 2006 – Itron Inc. has announced the completion of benchmark performance testing of Itron Enterprise Edition (IEE) meter data management software on HP Integrity servers and StorageWorks EVA8000 disk arrays.
The conclusion of extensive testing verifies IEE’s ability to support the installations of advanced metering systems exceeding 10 million meters.
The benchmark testing was conducted in HP’s Marlboro test facility over several months, using a realistic data set of 130 million hourly meter readings per day, equivalent to a utility of over 10 million electric and gas meters. The tests were conducted using processing windows and business rules based on Itron’s experience with the ‘day-in-the-life’ processing of the meter-to-cash workflow. This number of readings represents the largest scale benchmarking test in the meter data management industry to date.
The results of the testing established:
