US utility Rocky Mountain Power has signed a contract with Itron to deploy the firm’s OpenWayRiva IoT solution in an effort to modernise its grid network.
The utility will deploy 250,000 OpenWay Riva smart electricity meters to improve grid awareness.
The advanced metering infrastructure solution will be deployed in Idaho.
The utility will also upgrade from existing Itron automated meter reading solution to the advanced metering infrastructure in Utah.
The aim is to increase the lifespan of the utility’s existing assets through improved operation, management and maintenance.
Rocky Mountain Power will also leverage Itron’s OpenWay Operations Center software, providing analytics capability between the distributed metering device population and the utility back-office systems.
The energy provider is confident that the IoT solution will help to improve service reliability and reduce costs.
The project will provide capabilities including outage detection, meter-to-transformer mapping and meter temperature monitoring.
