Sweden deploys NB-IoT networks for AMI purposes

IT solutions provider Telit has announced the deployment of its narrowband IoT (NB-IOT) module for smart metering in Sweden.

The firm’s ME910C1-E1 NB-IoT module has been deployed by Comsel System on three networks.

The project is amongst the first commercial smart meter rollout projects using Long Term Evolution NB-IoT networks.

The networks in which the NB-IoT module has been deployed was previously based on 3G.

The upgrade will equip the network with features including Power Saving Mode and extended Discontinuous Reception.

The new features will enable smart meters to go on sleep mode when there is no data to send and wake up periodically to deliver small amounts of data to the network and then go back to sleep again.

This will increase the battery life for the smart meters to beyond ten years.

NB-IoT will also provide enhance penetration to reach or provide connectivity to smart meters even deep inside buildings and underground utility vaults.

The project is expected to help utilities improve their services to customers.
