Tacoma Public Utilities selects a partner for an advanced metering project

In the US, Tacoma Public Utilities has partnered with Sensus to implement an advanced metering infrastructure project to improve customer services.

The grid modernisation project includes more than 190,000 electric and 110,000 water customers to help them improve water and energy efficiency.

Sensus is providing the utility with its Stratus IQ smart electric meters, IPERL and Ally smart water meters and an IoT communication network.

The network is expected to ensure fast, secure and reliable data telemetry from advanced meters and sensors to the utility over FCC-licensed spectrum.

The project is expected to help Tacoma Public Utilities to improve billing accuracy and provide new services such as outage management and leak detection.

Andre Pedeferri, programme manager at Tacoma, said: “The modernisation effort will also help us sustain our operations well into the future.”

“Ultimately, our goal is to give customers more control over their energy and water usage.

“The reliability of the FlexNet system will allow us to expand our customer service offerings in an efficient and cost-effective way.”
