In Australia, WaterGroup has partnered with HZ Metering to increase utilities smart meter adoption.
WaterGroup, an integrated water savings company, will distribute HZ Metering’s Network-ready Ultrasonic smart water meters (NUmeter) to utilities in the Australian market.
Numeter is claimed to be Australia’s first smart water meter with an IoT communications network (NB-IoT, Sigfox, LoraWan) integrated into it.
Guenter Hauber-Davidson, the managing director of WaterGroup, said: “The NUmeter will enable WaterGroup to help tackle two of the major challenges facing Australian utilities.
“First of all, each year, utilities deliver about two billion cubic metres of potable water every year – but about 10-12% of this water is lost each year. This loss of water equates to over $400 million in water production costs every year. This loss can be minimised if a utility has a smart network and a smart water metering system.
“With the NUmeter we can provide utilities, that operate networks, with a cost-effective way to truly understand, in near real time, where the water is going – and where it is lost – in their water distribution networks.”
Using Numeter, WaterGroup is confident it will help utilities save more than 160 million litres of water (enough to supply 900,000 residents) per annum.
The smart meter will be used to help water companies address growing water usage and scarcity due to rapid increases in urban population.
Infrastructure Australia forecasts the country’s three largest cities will record massive population increases between 2016 and 2046 with Sydney’s rising from 5 million to 7.4 million, Melbourne from 4.6 million to 7.3 million and Brisbane 2.4 million to 4 million.
