Ontario based Chatham-Kent’s Public Utilities Commission is set to kick off its water meter upgrade programme.
Neptune Technology Group has been contracted to upgrade all 36,000 water meters in the municipality over the next 19 months.
There are roughly 18,000 of the 36,000 meters that have been in service for 15 years or more and require replacement due to wear on internal parts, resulting in the meter being incapable of capturing lower flows.
This Water Meter Upgrade Programme has been divided into two phases:
• Phase 1 consists of upgrading or replacing every water meter outside the Community of Chatham to an AMR (Automated Meter Reading) system.
• Phase 2 consists of upgrading or replacing every water meter inside the Community of Chatham to an AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) system.
The meter upgrade will ensure greater accuracy of readings, eliminate estimated billing, reduce non-revenue water loss and allow for more efficient customer service.
Once the new meter has been installed, homeowners will be able to identify leaks on their premises. The quicker response time to these leaks will ensure high water bills are avoided.
The programme is mandatory however, homeowners will not need to pay for the new meter.
“Customers in the Merlin area will be in the first installation cycle in Chatham-Kent,” said PUC commissioner and West Kent Coun. Bryon Fluker in a release.
“Timelines have been set for completion of each area and it is up to the customer to book their appointments.”
As technicians move into the area, residents will receive a notification in the mail containing information on how to book an appointment by phone or online.
Residents are asked not contact Neptune until this notice is received.
