NYSERDA announces New York’s largest battery storage installation


The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has announced the completion of the state’s largest battery energy storage system.

Key Capture Energy’s system will be used to enhance the performance and reliability of the state’s power grid.

The 20MW battery storage system will help the state to reduce its carbon emissions and achieve goals set as part of the governor’s Green New Deal, a climate change initiative which stipulates the state to deploy 3,000MW of storage capacity by 2030.

 The battery storage system KCE NY1 is located in the Capital Region and was developed in partnership with the University at Albany and the state’s START-UP NY programme which is administered by the Empire State Development.

The Key Capture Energy system is the first to be completed since Governor Cuomo announced the state’s Market Acceleration Bridge Incentive Programme in April which included $150 million for bulk storage projects.

Alicia Barton, CEO at NYSERDA, said, “Governor Cuomo has set New York on a path to lead the country and the world when it comes to deploying clean energy, and this project is more evidence that New York is not wasting any time getting started.  This first project under NYSERDA’s energy storage incentive program – the largest battery installation in the state to date—will enhance our electric system and demonstrate the value of large scale energy storage systems that will accelerate our ability to meet the state’s commitment to a carbon-free electric system by 2040.”
