This time last year in this column we commented on the acceleration of activity in smart metering and smart grids in Europe and this has continued unabated over the past year. Indeed, a recent report on smart grid activity in Europe (see p. 80) finds that more than €5 billion has been invested in excess of 200 projects to date, although this is still only a fraction of the estimated €56 billion that will be invested by 2020. More than half of this investment has been in smart metering and much of the groundwork, including piloting of technology and standards development, is now well under way in preparation for the large scale rollout that is likely to start in many countries around 2013/14.
