US city of Magnolia partners with Kamstrup on AMI rollout


According to a statement, Magnolia water department will integrate with its water network Kamstrup’s READY automated meter reading system.

The solution will include some 1,120 ultrasonic smart water meters and an automated meter reading system to enable the utility division to remotely read water consumption data.

Kamstrup claims its automated meter reading system will help the city reduce time spent in collecting consumer water consumption data from 10 to 15 days to just 3 hours.

Paul Mendes, a city administrator for the city of Magnolia, commented: “Finding the meters was a challenge for our meter reading crew.

“And in our area, it’s not uncommon to get four to five inches of rain in just a few hours. The pits filled up faster than you could pump it.”

Mendes adds that the static meters have a long lifespan owing to the fact that they don’t have any moving parts and will, therefore, help the city avoid high operational and maintenance costs incurred by other cities in regular replacement of worn out meters.

“… In our city, we thought we had the best in mechanical meters, but even those were free-wheeling and not registering [water usage],” says Mendes.

The new ultrasonic smart water meters are expected to help the city improve its revenue collection and reduce non-revenue water through accuracy in recording consumer water usage data.

Automated meter reading system and related services

The news follows the city of Witchita Falls in Texas launching an online portal for its automated meter reading system.

According to a statement, the online portal MyH2O allows consumers to access their water usage data using mobile devices, pay their bills online as well as set water efficiency targets.

This platform will enable consumers in Witchita Falls to check their daily and weekly water usage levels and compare it to their monthly set average.

Witchita Falls will directly communicate with its consumers via SMS, telephone or email notifying them in the event they reach, or are close to reaching, their monthly set water consumption averages. Read more…
