New York City has selected Chinatown Bureau (CTB) and Innogy Consulting as finalists of its NYCx Climate Action Challenge programme.
The two consulting firms will partner with technology startup CTB to develop and provide the city with solutions to scale electric vehicle charging hubs and increase consumer adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).
The $40 million to be used under the programme will fund development of EV charging infrastructure, a mobility app connecting customers with charging stations and five community hubs.
The community hubs will offer a variety of services beyond charging stations including public transport, EV valet parking, Wi-Fi connectivity and local business deals.
Installation is expected to last for five years beginning in 2020.
A study conducted by the city highlights that 30% of carbon emissions in New York come from cars and trucks, 90% of which are from private vehicles.
The NYCx Climate Change programme was launched by Bill de Blasio, NYC mayor in 2017, for the city to partner with technology companies in developing and implementing new technologies to address climate change and transportation access, while increasing jobs and supporting a growing cleantech economy.
According to the chief technology officer of NYC’s mayor’s office: “NYCx is the world’s first municipal programme to transform urban spaces into hubs for tech collaboration, research, testing, and development. New York City’s diverse population, economy, and landscape offer a unique opportunity for technology companies to develop tools that improve the world.”
