Schneider Electric and local partner chosen for smart city development in India


The contract was awarded by the Naya Raipur Development Authority in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. Under the project, hardware for sensors for data collection will be deployed.
Operating technology for controlling information and enterprise control will also be set up for the development authority.

“We will be developing the smart city along with IL&FS, with special focus on efficiency and smart solutions for infrastructure of Naya Raipur. The project will have three key elements – physical, social, and economic infrastructure,” Prakash Chandraker, managing director of Schneider Electric Infrastructure, told the Economic Times’ Energy World.

“The partnership with IL&FS helps us leverage their strength in infrastructure and our strength in electric and smart solutions,” Chandraker said.

“We are keen to take up more smart city projects. This is a greenfield project, so it would be easier to execute than an existing city which has to be converted into a smart city,” Chandraker said.

Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Limited (IL&FS) is an Indian infrastructure development and finance company.

The Indian government has plans underway to develop 100 smart cities which will use smart and intelligent technology solutions that will lead to better connectivity and efficiency in energy, building, transport, healthcare, infrastructure, governance, education and citizen services.

Following increases in population, rural to urban migration and industrial activities, smart city technologies were identified as a measure to optimise the management of urban resources including water and energy.

The Indian government launched the Smart Cities Mission in June 2016 under efforts to modernise urban infrastructure to improve the operations of government parastatals and companies in the water, transport, communications, gas and electricity sectors.

The Ministry of Urban Development announced that it expects to spend up to $15 billion in implementing the Smart Cities Mission.

Utility companies are aiming to increase their renewable energy portfolios, reduce carbon emissions and help consumers improve management of their energy consumption through the use of IoT technologies.
