The high power, long range radio communication solution, FlexNet, is expected to improve the efficiency of meter reading operations, especially for the elderly living in mountainous areas in Hakone, Japan, where meters have been difficult to reach.
Sensus Japan has conducted trials in city environments, with Hakone being a strategic location due to its varied landscape; snow and hard to reach meters under metal lids and under water.
Sensus will be responsible for the supply of the water meters equipped with FlexNet technology. Mirait Technologies will design and construct the radio equipment, while KDDI will be responsible for the provision and visualization of measurement data collected from the smart meter.
Smart water solution

The FlexNet network utilizes the frequency band of 280 MHz band which has radio wave reachability and high radio wave characteristics which enables communication inside a building and water meter pit.

IoT technology will continue to be leveraged in the water supply industry for accurate leak management and optimization of distribution water networks.
