US city announces plans to implement AMI pilot


In the US state of Texas, Coppell City Council announced plans to deploy a smart water meter pilot.

The trial initiative is likely to be implemented in partnership with Siemens, at a total costs of $40,000.

The smart water meters pilot will help the city council to understand the benefits of automated and advanced metering systems over analogue water meters.

The city will use the trial in developing a framework which will be used in deploying advanced water meters at mass scale. The smart meters will be installed to ensure accurate water billing and to improve management of water distribution network and consumer water efficiency.

To date, Coppell city has 6,700 analogue meters, 5,800 radio-read water meters and 1,000 cloud meters.

Commenting on deploying the smart meters at mass scale, Noel Bernal, deputy city manager at Coppell, said: “These meters have a unique capability in that they will enhance the accuracy of the reads with ultrasonic reads that read to the drop.

“We’ve been budgeting $300,000 a year for the Smart Meter project. At that rate, it’s going to take us about six and half years to complete this project.”

Smart metering in Australia

Meanwhile, the rate at which utilities and cities in Australia are deploying smart water metering technologies is increasing.

The Cairns Regional Council in Queensland is deploying Itron’s OpenWay Riva IoT solution to modernise its water distribution system.

The IoT solution will simplify the acquisition of data from smart water meters and sensors, regarding consumer water usage and pressure of water within the distribution network. This will result in quick detection of water leaks, reduction in water wastage and improvements in water efficiency and utility’s revenue collection.

The Gympie Regional Council installed TAKADU’s event management solution as part of a move to improve automation of water network. The solution will help Cairns Regional Council to set district metered areas to simplify management of its water distribution network.
