Tata Power expands smart meter order with Landis+Gyr

According to a statement, the deal for the provision of the 200,000 single and three phase smart meters is Landis+Gyr’s second deal with Tata Power following a contract for the supply of 500,000 advanced meters early this year.

The deal forms part of efforts by Tata Power Delhi to improve customer services through the adoption of smart energy and innovative technologies and business cases.

Tata Power Delhi, which provides electricity to some 1.6 million metering points in the north of Delhi, secured regulatory approval to deploy smart meters at mass scale following the success of a pilot of the technology implemented in partnership with Landis+Gyr.

The smart meters are expected to help the utility to eliminate customer churn and to better serve its consumers by personalising its services.

For instance, through access to real-time energy usage data, consumers will be able to identify energy efficiency potentials, change energy usage behaviours and participate in utility’s demand side management initiatives, which in turn would help consumers earn extra revenues or credits in energy bills for reducing consumption levels during peak periods.

On the side of the utility, the system will reduce operational expenses incurred in reading meters manually. The technology helps reduce energy theft through the detection of meter tampering, also helps in improving management and maintenance of distribution assets.

Through the deployment of smart grid solutions including smart metering and home automation, Tata Power Delhi claims it has reduced aggregate technical and distribution losses from 53% to 8.59%.

Praveer Sinha, CEO of Tata Power-DDL, said, “We are dedicated to bringing state of the art AMI technology and solutions to our customers in North Delhi. Our work with Landis+Gyr on India’s first, large scale, smart meter and RF canopy deployment, which covers the full 510 square kilometres of Tata Power-DDL’s area of operation, marks a significant step in our efforts to bring smart grid technology to India.

“This deployment will not only empower our consumers by utilising a two-way communication system, but it will also help us to build an important foundation for a truly smart grid, featuring world class power distribution infrastructure.”
