Investments in US smart water infrastructure $8.3bn by 2021, report


The Ireland-based research firm conducted a survey to understand US utilities’ smart water infrastructure investment plans.

The survey was done on some 340 water utilities, of which a large share say they have either completed or have interest to invest in smart water infrastructure to improve their operations.

According to the findings of the study, the US has the largest and most developed smart water infrastructure market in the world. A number of factors including continued investments in smart city infrastructure in the US points to more utility funds being directed towards continued growth and initial development of smart water infrastructure.

For instance, only 60% of water consumers have to date been equipped with either an automated or advanced metering system. Utilities efforts to equip all water consumers with communicating digital meters will result in the growth of the smart water infrastructure market between 2017 and 2027.

Although the US is the global leader in adopting smart water infrastructure, there are still a number of utilities not interested in implementing the new technologies.

Water infrastructure management

Outside the US, in Ireland (Europe), Irish Water selected EMR Integrated Solutions for the supply and installation of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.

The €1 million ($1.1 million) deal falls under efforts by Irish Water to upgrade the telemetry of data regarding the performance of its water distribution infrastructure in Waterford and Leitrim.

The new SCADA system is expected to help Irish Water to increase automation and improve management and monitoring of its water network through access to real-time data on the performance of the water system.

For instance, the programme is expected to help Irish Water to better make use of data communicated by remote terminal units (RTU) and data loggers installed at some 200 sites within the utility’s water network in Waterford. Read more…
